QUANTITY OF OXYGEN IN WATER AND NEEDS OF LIVING BEINGS

An outlet in different locations of a river allows you to make readings of the amount of oxygen in water.

It is noted that the amount of oxygen varies between upstream (source) and downstream (outlet to the sea) a river.

If we place a trout in a water poor in oxygen, it dies. Similarly, if you place a bream in an oxygen-rich water, it also dies. The water temperature changes the amount of oxygen contained in water. More water is cold, the more it is rich in oxygen. More water is warmer, it is poor in oxygen. The fish do not have the same needs oxygen. As the amount of oxygen dissolved in water varies according to the parts of the river, this explains the distribution of fish. The river is a living environment where the amount of oxygen exchange between the beginning and the end of his course. But all fish do not need the same amount of oxygen.

Under problem : why the amount of oxygen dissolved in water (oxygenation) she varies in a river?

Assumptions : Many parameters (temperature, agitation of the water, the presence of green plants, depth, sunshine ...) can change the amount of oxygen dissolved in water. The man by his various activities (agriculture, industry, discharge sewage ...) may also play a role.

-The agitation of water (current) changes the amount of oxygen contained in the water. More water is stirred, the more it is rich in oxygen.

- To the presence of green plants (chlorophyll) :

 

In the dark, the amount of oxygen decreases in the presence of green plants. This is explained by the fact that plants breathe and thus collect the oxygen in the water.In the light, the amount of oxygen increases in the presence of green plants. This is explained by the fact that light, green plants produce oxygen by photosynthesis. The day they therefore produce more oxygen through photosynthesis than they collect for their breathing.

Some features of the environment such as temperature, agitation of the water and green plants affect the amount of oxygen contained in the water. Low temperatures, strong agitation and the presence of chlorophyll plants with light increases the oxygenation of the water.

Fish death is not due to a toxic product but with a decrease in the amount of oxygen dissolved in water.

The depletion of oxygen in water is responsible for the death of millions of freshwater fish a year, here is an example:

The dissolution of oxygen in water kills anaerobic bacteria and contributes to improving the water quality, that's why it used in water treatement .
